김치를 좋아해요?
Lisa: 안녕하세요. Hello, everyone, and welcome to LET’S SPEAK KOREAN. I’m your host Lisa Kelley. And are you ready for today’s lesson? First we have Stephen Revere, he’s a wonderful guy do the Korean language. Hello, Stephen?
Stephen: Hello, everybody, 안녕하세요. Thank you for being with us again today. Today you’re going to learn a little bit about how to say what you like, what you enjoy. And you also gonna learn how to use the word
BUT, b-u-t, that’s one key. And how to talk about the thing what you don’t like as well.
Lisa: OK, we also have Miriam and Jason in the stereo, they’re students for today. Hello?
Miriam: I feel a little bit hungry.
Lisa: Hungry? You know, that just happened to be me and Stephen love eating, and he actually knows all the good places and all the good things eating in Korea, right?
LET’S DO IT
김치를 좋아해요?
네, 맵지만 맛있어요.
Lisa: As we heard, we’re talking about 김치, a few things living in Korea, all you knowing about Korea. We can’t leave at김치
when we talk about Korea, right?
Stephen: Yes, 김치 goes into every single thing. You get your 김치 burger, you get your 김치 pizza, you get your … 김치 can find its way into just about any, 김치 만두, of course one of my favorites.
Lisa: What my new findings is 김치spaghetti, you know that’s pretty good. I mean I can’t have meal without 김치, pretty good stuff there.
Stephen: Yes, what you think 김치 is a little bit spicy. It’s OK, but it’s a little bit spicy. You will say, your response, 네, 맵지만 맛있어요. 맛 is taste, 있어요 is to exist, to be there, so 맛있어요. And in front, 맵다 is to be spicy, you take the part 뱁, and you put 지만 after. 맵지만 맛있어요.
좋지만 비싸요. (O) positive + negative
착하지만 예뻐요. (X) positive + positive
착하지만 공부 못해요. (O) positive + negative
Lisa: Right, and one thing to remember when you use 지만, you just have one positive, and one negative. So for example, you say something is good, but, 지만, although, or meanwhile, and then you have to put a negative behind it, all bad words of. Also remember you could use either way, positive then negative, or negative then positive. So how we say this, I want you guys to make a sentence for me.
Miriam: You were saying, the first phrase positive, and then the next negative. What about this? 좋지만 비싸요.
Lisa: Good! I think it goes when I’m shopping. I like it, but it’s too expensive for me.
Stephen: And you can reverse words too, right? 비싸지만 좋아요. Same thing.
Jason: 착하지만 예뻐요.
Lisa: This sentence is wrong. One negative and one positive. 착하다 is to be nice, and 예쁘다 is pretty. You cannot say she’s nice but she’s pretty.
Jason: How about 착하지만 공부 못해요?
Lisa: 착하지만 is she’s nice, or good manner, but공부, she studies못해요, she doesn’t study well.
Stephen: Lisa, she’s 예쁘지만 공부 못해요.
I like Korean and want to make friends with everyone who like it as well.
