아까 먹었어요!

Lisa: Hello, everyone, and welcome to LET’S SPEAK KOREAN. 안녕하세요. 저는 Lisa 입니다. I’m your host Lisa. And next me you have…
Stephen: 안녕하세요. I am Stephen, and I will be coaching through today’s lesson along with Lisa.
Lisa: And we can’t live without our wonderful student, Miriam and Jason.
Miriam: Hello, Lisa and Stephen. 여러분, 안녕하세요, 저는 Miriam 입니다.
Jason: Hello, everybody, I’m Jason. 저는 Jason 입니다. We can work some more new phrases today.

Lisa: Great! Before we start our lesson today, you know how I love coffee. How do you feel about a cup of coffee?
Stephen: Ah, I’d LOVE a cup of coffee, but I’m afraid I drink too much coffee today. I’ve already had three cups. I just had some coffee a little while ago.
Lisa: You know, culturally here in Korea, it’s very rude to have coffee by yourself. I think I didn’t see you drink by yourself, but you didn’t offer to get me a cup of, and Miriam and Jason. That’s so rude.
Stephen: Yeah, I’m familiar with that. I was passing by a coffee shop on the way here. I’m sorry I didn’t get coffee for everybody. Next time.
Lisa: Next evening after the show?
Stephen: Sure.

LET’S DO IT
커피 어때요?
아까 마셨어요.

Verb(adj) Stem <,> + ~
Lisa: Yes, today we will learn the past tense. Actually the past tense is not as difficult as the past tense in English. So I think we quickly slide to this. You have heard the dialogue 커피 어때요? How about a cup of coffee? And the answer was 아까 earlier, 마셨어요 I had it.
Stephen: The past tense in Korean is a kind of talk, they don’t have all the irregular words we have in English. So it does make it much easier. But there’re some confusing things. First of all, you add to all verbs that contain in the last syllable or. Sometimes you just remember which verbs, which vowel you have to remember for that. Let me help you.

오다 is to come in Korean, and 가다 is to go in Korean.
가다 ---> 갔다 ---> 갔어요
오다 ---> 왔다 ---> 왔어요

Verb(adj) Stem <’’> + ~
Stephen: It’s slightly difficult. 하다 which means to do. This gets attached to many verbs, to do and activity. So here you gonna 하다 plus , 하였다 matches together become 했어요.
Lisa: And what about start?
Stephen: Yes, 시작하다 is to start.

하다 ---> 했다 ---> 했어요
시작하다 ---> 시작했다 ---> 시작했어요
먹다 ---> 먹었어요 [eat]

(O) 커피 어때요?
(X) 커피 어때요?
Stephen: No, you don’t use , you use one glass, it’s your first idiom. 어때요? How about grabbing a cup of coffee, something like that? You always use one.
Lisa: It doesn’t just refer to coffee. You say 어때요 means how about a drink? And that can refer to alcohol, coca, whatever.
Stephen: 커피, be careful, not 코피, it’s blood in your nose.

마시다 ---> 마시었다 ---> 마시었어요 ---> 마셨어요

WRAP IT UP
L: 스티븐! 커피 어때요?     Stephen, how about a cup of coffee?
S: 미안하지만, 아까 마셨어요.     Sorry, I drank earlier.
L: 그럼, 케익은 어때요?     How about cake?
S: 아까 먹었어요.     I ate earlier.
